A Case for Kenya Essay Foreword After two and a half years of studying, I was given the opportunity to do a research project as part of my graduation. Since I wanted to go abroad for a longer time, I tried to look for internships in countries outside the Netherlands. In my second year, I did an internship at Move Your World. Move Your World aims to create awareness on (business) development issues among young Dutch citizens by organising workshops, seminars and competitions. Working with this subject for five months made me realise I wanted to find an internship in a developing country, focusing on business topics. After the internship, Move Your World offered me a job as a project assistant. The job description said I had to work with international development matters and I had to host the vacancy platform on the website. This meant that most vacancies regarding international development would end up in my inbox. I took the job and one of my main goals was to find a suitable internship abroad, regarding some sort of business topic. See more: Beowulf essay essay Luckily, in October 2010, Stichting AfriCulture’s vacancy dropped in my inbox. There were two main aspects that triggered my attention. First of all, it was in a developing country, Kenya. Secondly, I had to construct a business plan for an organisation. It suited perfectly to my wishes. I applied and I was selected to go to Kenya, together with two other Dutch business students. For the past three months I conducted a research for Mizizi Foundation, an organisation that tries to create awareness on Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainable Entrepreneurship among Kenyans. The problem I dealt with was finding a way to restart Mizizi Foundation. Working with an organisational restart issue was very interesting to me, since I may like to set up an organisation myself in the future. Furthermore, I learned a lot about Corporate Social Responsibility. I now believe that implementing a Corporate Social Responsibility-policy is a must for all organisations in the world. I would like to thank Anoek Vriesema, director of Stichting AfriCulture, for selecting me to go to Kenya and for having faith in my capabilities. In addition, I would like to thank Mr. Van Nispen, my supervisor, for his constructive advise on my thesis, and Froukje Joosten, my mother, who is a researcher, for her time-less patience in going through my work. Special thanks go out to three persons in particular. First of all, to my two dear colleagues Marleen and Ester, with whom I have been living and working for the past three months. We managed to combine a lot of fun with serious work, which resulted in a very good business plan and friendship for life.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In the novel Silas Marner, by George Eliot, the characters are in a search for happiness.   One character named Godfrey Cass is disappointed   in his search when relying on wealth and luck, instead of love, does not lead him to happiness.   Another character, Silas Marner, looks first to a pile of gold that only consumes his life until he starts loving and caring for a child, who finally brings him happiness.   The lives of these characters show that wealth or material objects do not bring as much happiness as love.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Godfrey Cass believes that he can use his wealth to buy happiness in place of love that he has neglected to give.   In the novel, he has a daughter named Eppie whom he disowns for eighteen years.   After eighteen years, Godfrey wants her back to fill a hole in his life and make him happy.   He believes that his wealth can replace his missing love.   He admits this when speaking to Eppie, â€Å"though I haven’t been what a father should ha’ been to you all these years, I wish to do the utmost in my power for you for the rest of my life and provide for you as my only child† (714).   However,   Eppie â€Å"can’t feel as [she’s] got any father but one,† (715) meaning Silas Marner, who cared for and loved her for sixteen years.   The lack of love that Godfrey has given Eppie can not be replaced with wealth, and Godfrey’s life must remain incomplete.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Silas Marner was once incomplete and unhappy also when he was â€Å"cut off from faith and love,† (602) and lived only to collect a hoard of gold.   He shut out the rest of the world and any love he had for anything with it.   â€Å"His life had reduced itself to the functions of weaving and hoarding† (602).   In this life with only gold, and without love, Silas was an unhappy and lonely man.   Later in his life when he is happy, he recalls counting his gold every night and â€Å"how his soul was utterly desolate†(710).   He remains in this bleak position for fifteen years until his gold is lost and replaced with something to love.     Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   When Silas loses his gold, he begins to experience happiness again after opening up to a child.   The child, Eppie, replaces Silas’s gold, but unlike the gold, she requires the love and care of a person.

The purpose of this article is to better understand the outlooks, levels of engagement, and obstacles of fathers in the United States. Finding Myself in Horseback Riding Essay I have thought long and hard for several days on what I could write about that would make me stand out or appear interesting. Ive never had a truly heartbreaking or painful experience and I consider myself to be an ordinary person. Im a decent athlete, maintain a B- average, fight with my siblings, go to church and do the basic day to day things. The only activity that comes to mind regarding how my character was molded is horses. Horses lend us wings we lack, when I enter the arena before a competition the only thing Im focused on is the beating heart of the horse underneath me. Our hearts beat together twice as fast. I cant describe the feeling I get after the gate shuts behind us and the event starts. The feeling is intoxicating. It doesnt matter where or when Im on my horse the feeling is always the same, I feel exhilarated and free. Being involved with horses has taught me to be independent, strong willed, and patient. My mom did an awesome job of playing the role as mom and dad. My mom has always told me that when I was younger I had an infectious smile, you never once saw me without a smile plastered on my face. That all changed December 2004, my dad walked out on our family leaving us broken. I was seven years old and after my dad left that happy-go-lucky kid lost her infectious smile, in fact that smile became a rarity. When I was nine my mom decided to introduce me to the therapeutic art of horseback riding. When being around horses every pain every worry goes away, anything that stresses me out becomes irrelevant, nothing else matter in the world except the horse and our connection. I have tried almost every type of horseback riding there is: english, western, bareback, pleasure riding, trail riding and jumping. Freshmen year I decided to try out local gymkhana shows to figure out if it was something I was into and I fell head over heels in love with every aspect of it. Last year, I joined California Gymkhana Association in District 33. I have finally found what Im good at and what I really love to do. Gymkhana is an equestrian event consisting of speed pattern races. Theres 13 events, the faster the rider completes the pattern the higher up on the leaderboard they will stand all year long you accumulate points to qualify for state championship, which I had the honor of attending this past summer with my family. The thirteen events are; poles I, poles II, barrels, figure 8 stake, figure 8 flags, keyhole, speed ball, birangle, quadrangle, hurry scurry, single stake, speed barrels, and big T. I was state ranked this past year in birangle, big t, speed barrels,and hurry scurry. My personal favorites is poles. My biggest strength when riding is my confidence and ability to read my horse. I always know what he is feeling by the way he moves and the way he looks at me. My biggest weakness last year was I look at the ground and not where I am going, I think I do this not because Im petrified of falling and getting hurt but because Im fearful of falling and humiliating myself. My mom makes a lot of sacrifices for me to compete and when I mess up or make mistakes I feel like Im disappointing her. After my state championship experience I have overcome this bad habit. I have learned you define your own success, and to me success is liking yourself, liking what you do and liking how you do it.
